Workshop Description

English learners can spend years learning grammar and building their vocabulary, yet still feel helpless when it comes to actually speaking English. What's often missing is rhythm, a vital synthesis of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary that supports speaking confidence.  Drawing on her work with Shirley Thompson and Dr. Robin Barr in The Color Vowel Approach (2015), Karen Taylor de Caballero will lead you through the Why, the What, and the How of rhythm:  Why rhythm is central both to language learning and language proficiency; What elements shape rhythm, including stress and vowel quality; and How to use existing chants and create spontaneous chants to target specific skills and reinforce learning. Throughout, she will model the use of songs to experience, illustrate and teach the rhythm of spoken English. This workshop is relevant to ESL  teachers and tutors regardless of their learners' ages or levels. You don't have to be 'a singer' to make use of the strategies you will learn; just come ready to try something new, and we'll make sure you go home inspired.
